#TeamHERO athletes encompass everything it means to be a true HERO: they are athletes on the field, scholars in the classroom, and volunteers in the community.
Last month, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Ms. Morgan Hawes of PASA. I was so impressed with her confidence, composure, and motivation to achieve her dreams.
Learn more about Morgan below and congratulate her on HERO's Facebook page!
Never give up.
Age: 13 years old
Current town: San Carlos, CA
Why is swimming your favorite sport?
I love the competition. Sometimes I get nerves when I am on the block but it all pays off when I get a good time. I also love community within swimming. Everyone always says “hi” to one another and it makes the meets really fun.
What is the best advice you've received from a coach?
"If you don’t do well, there is always next time. Never get down on yourself”.
Best sports moment?
In a meet last month, I made it to the finals and was going against the best swimmer there. She was a couple of years older than me. I ended up swimming in the second heat and got the far western time!! I threw my arms in the air and was so excited.
What is your dream within swimming?
My goal is to make it to the Olympics!
Missy Franklin is my favorite athlete because she always has such a good attitude. She is always humble and has such positive energy.
What is your favorite subject in school?
My favorite subject is math because one of my previous teachers, Mrs. S made math fun and was always so energetic. It has been fun to me ever since.
My best talent is swimming! My favorite events are the 100 free, 100 fly, and 50 free.
What age are you most excited to be? Why?
I am most excited to be 18 so that I can be swimming in college. I love the age that I am now but I really want to go to Stanford and swim there!
What is your most prized possession?
My most prized possession is my silver coin collection that my grandfather gave me. He is my favorite person.
What do you want to me when you grow up?
I want to be an engineer and an olympian when I get older. Big dreams!
If you were an animal, what would you be?
I’d be a tiger! They are fierce and actually really good swimmers.
If you became president, what is the first thing you would do?
If I were president, I would help the homeless. Everyone should be given the opportunity to succeed and be happy. I’d give the homeless bathrooms, showers, and access to education so that they can learn.
When have you been most proud of yourself?
I am most proud of myself when I am helping others. I was talking to my friend at a meet the other day and she was really feeling bad. I talked her through it and told her to turn that negative energy into something good and think positive. She dropped time in every event! It made my really happy.
And lastly, who is your HERO?
My mom and dad are my heroes. They have always been so supportive and inspiring. They’re always there to push me through, encourage me, and give me constructive criticism.
Say hi to Morgan on the HERO Facebook page.
