HERO Visits the 2015 Special Olympics

July 27, 2015 1 Comment

The 2015 Special Olympics kicked off over the weekend in sunny Los Angeles and HERO was on hand to take in the sights and sounds.

The games were founded by Eunice Kennedy Shriver in 1962 in what started as a simple day camp for the intellectually impaired. Nine years later in 1971 the games became the "Special Olympics" and a movement was born.

The 2015 games officially started Saturday night when First Lady Michelle Obama and a host of athletes and celebrities led an inspiring opening ceremony in the LA Coliseum.

Today, the games appear to be healthier than ever as 6,500 athletes from 165 countries gather in Los Angeles. Over the next week these athlete will compete guided by the Special Olympics oath: "Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt."

The games are not just about competition-everywhere we looked this weekend there was great food, music, and wonderful spectators creating a positive atmosphere.

Watching the athletes compete and have fun this weekend was a real blessing and we can't thank all those who worked behind the scenes to create such a wonderful event.

If you're in the Los Angeles area, stop by the games! Events continue through August 2nd and admission to all events is free!
