Joseph Frye is as classy as it gets. He takes what he learns on the mat and puts it into life. realizing along the way that wrestling is also a great coach for life. He has a HERO he looks up to (be sure to read about it, it's truly great), and he also aims to set a great example for his little brother. But, more than anything, Joseph has down to earth hard work built into his very soul. "Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard" is his adopted motto, and we don't doubt for a second that Joseph is pushing that motto every single day! Best of all, Joseph has personal goals, but he also aims to give back to wrestling by coaching and mentoring. This guy is a true inspiration, and he has done fantastic on the HERO Quest and we couldn't be happier to have had him along. Read on, learn about Joseph, and we are certain that along the way you will learn about what makes wrestling so special.

Why do you enjoy wrestling?

I love wrestling because it takes away all excuses, it’s all on me. It pushes you to be better. I enjoy the competition and the chance to step out there and see how I compare to others and the adrenaline of combat is second to none, but the coolest part is the friends you make in this sport are friends for life (unlike any other sport I’ve played, in wrestling you can earn the respect of your opponent and in return gain a bond that is unbreakable).

What's the most important thing wrestling has taught you?

That there are no excuses, win or lose you have to keep your head up and be prepared for the next match. The same goes for life, you are going to fail sometimes but you have to get back up and carry on.

What's the best advice your coach has given you?

He always says that hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard… this is my motto and I try to always be the hardest worker on and off the mat to be my best at all I do.

.

,

How do you handle tough defeats?

I don’t like to lose, but it has helped me grow. We go back and watch the video and try to learn where I can get better. It motivates me to work harder and improve to push myself to be better both on and off the mat. My dad/coach always says “there are no losers, only winners and learners” and I try my best to keep this attitude but it is hard, and drives me to be better.

.

What’s your proudest achievement as a wrestler?

Being selected to represent my state on the National Team level. I enjoy getting to make friends with kids all across the state and competing against the best kids in the nation.

What's your favorite wrestling move?

I have a few: from stand-up it would either be the HAWK (head and arm throw) or a lat-drop; from top I love to throw legs and although it is hard to hit, the Crucifix is awesome to put on someone, I also love to work Chicken Wings and stack them up.

,Do you have a hero/role model?

On the professional level I admire Ed Ruth and Jordan Burroughs; they are great wrestlers and I hope to achieve the success they have had. I also admire a local MMA fighter, Tyler “Melee” Minton – he has shown me that through hard work and dedication you can achieve anything that you set your mind to, and he helps me with my nutrition. But here is my HERO - I have a teammate (Owen) that was born with a condition known as congenital amputation (he has one full arm, the other ends at the elbow, one leg that ends near the knee and the other that ends close to his hip). He NEVER complains that life isn’t fair, or that people need to take it easy on him. He goes on the mat, gives it everything he has and expects the other wrestler to treat him the same way they would anyone else. He has a heart of a champion and win or lose (unfortunately he doesn’t get his hand raised often) he shakes the other guys hand, thanks them for giving him a match, and SMILES. Being around him makes me a better person. Owen is the real winner and is my HERO!

What's your favorite subject in school?

I love Science; I like experimenting and have won the Science fair for the past 2 years.

Do you play any sports aside from wrestling?

A also play soccer, baseball, and run 5K's.

Do you have any other hobbies outside of wrestling?

I love to hunt and fly-fish; anything outdoors really.

What are your goals for your wrestling career?

Of course, I want to win titles but ultimately I want to do well enough in high school to get a scholarship to wrestle in college. I then want to give back in the form of helping teach others this great sport (maybe coach or mentor).

What are your goals for the next 1-5 years?

I am wrapping up my 7th grade season and over the next 5 years my goal is to become one of the best wrestlers in my state as I enter 8th grade and get ready for high school. I have applied to be on the Ohio All-Star team next summer; they travel all over the US. My ultimate goal is to earn a college scholarship in wrestling. I also want to be known as a student that can be counted on to lead others by example, and I know that starts with getting good grades and being dependable.

Where is your biggest area where you could improve?

I need to continue to realize where I fall short (school and wrestling) and make adjustments to be better all around. I am trying to be a good big brother and set an example for my little brother, but this is hard and something I need to work on.
