Full Name: Alexander Joseph Randell

Birthday: July 2nd, 2002

Wrestling Club: GGT Wrestling

SchoolQuest Academy

Hometown: Buffalo Grove, IL

Weight Class: 70 lb. Novice.

Most significant wins/accomplishments: Place at Folk Style Nationals; 2nd Place at Winter Nationals; 1st at Celtic Elite; Most decorated wrestler in history of GGT Wrestling.

This kid can wrestle. Coming to us all the way from Illinois, Alex Randell has taken the HERO Quest and turned it on its head, doing an awesome job and having fun along the way. After all, that's what Alex is all about: working hard and having fun. Whether life is dealing you the cards that day or not, working hard is the best way to push on through. We really appreciate that sort of mentality here at HERO, and Alex is another wrestler that really brings light to this wonderful sport.

Read on, learn something knew about Alex, and be sure to congratulate him if you see him around. And good luck out there Alex, we are sure you will continue to crush it and do awesome!

 Why do you enjoy wrestling?

I enjoy wrestling because it gives me a more obscure challenge to work towards.  Wrestlers have to do things not all athletes do to succeed.

What's the best thing wrestling has taught you?

Wrestling has taught me that no matter how good the other guy is, hard work will always push through along with a winning mindset.

What's the best advice your coach has given you?

My coach has taught me that the world can be a jerk sometimes and not everything will be in my favor and that I have to be the one to take my stand and make a name for myself.

How do you handle tough defeats?

It is important for me to always bring my A-game to the mat and when I am not performing well, I just work hard the next day and do whatever I need to do to win.

What’s your proudest achievement as a wrestler?

So far I have not won many titles but placing at State this year has to be the biggest thing I have done.  I placed 8th due to an injury default.

How old were you when you started wrestling?

I was 6 years old!

What's your favorite wrestling move?

For on the feet I like a high-crotch, sweep single, or a duck-under.  On bottom I just escape without a particular move.  With riding and turning, regardless if I actually finish it, most of my turns come from a ball-and-chain.

Do you have a hero or role model?

In general my brother is my hero, but in wrestling, I idolize Dan Gable.

What's your favorite subject in school?

I like science, technology class, and math.

Do you play any sports aside from wrestling?

I used to play football and hockey but now I just wrestle.

Do you have any other hobbies outside of wrestling?

I play the trumpet and I occasionally cook for my family and myself.

What are your goals for your wrestling career?

I want to go to win a NCAA title.  At least one.  If I can win multiple times I will.  After or during college I want to wrestle in the Olympics.  After I cannot wrestle any longer I will open a youth wrestling team in IKWF.

What are your goals for this season?

My goal for this season was to at least place at State and try to get as high of a place I could.

I wanted to say that you are one of the greatest athletes I’ve know. You are kind, responsible, and considerate. Even though I never was able to completely become friends at school, I could tell that you were much better than everybody else at school. Thank you, Alex for being such a great guy!

Alex,
While I’m super proud of you as an athlete, wrestling is actually a small part of what makes you a great kid. You are always there to help other people. I know you spend your summers volunteering without a second thought, but in all honesty it’s a huge sacrifice. And Just as you happily make every sacrifice demanded by wrestling, I see the same spirit of a giving soul in everything you do. I love you very much!

I’ve coached against and have watched Alex wrestle for the past six years. He is a role model and leader. He is extremely dedicated to the sport. There is no better choice for this award.
